UK Christmas Last Posting Dates 2026: Royal Mail and Parcelforce
Royal Mail has published its Christmas 2026 last posting dates for UK inland services, and Parcelforce Worldwide has published its own. This guide lists them, explains the difference between the services, and gives you a planning timeline for cards, gifts and anything you need to send back. For a quick check against today’s date, use the shipping deadline tool and choose United Kingdom.
Royal Mail inland last posting dates
| Last posting date | Service |
|---|---|
| Friday 18 December | 2nd Class, 2nd Class Signed For |
| Saturday 19 December | Royal Mail Tracked 48 |
| Monday 21 December | 1st Class, 1st Class Signed For, Royal Mail Tracked 24 |
| Wednesday 23 December | Special Delivery Guaranteed |
Royal Mail adds that Saturday 19 December is also the last posting date for Royal Mail Tracked Returns 48 to arrive back with the sender before Christmas. All of the dates are labelled “correct at the time of publishing and subject to change”, and Royal Mail advises posting as early as possible.
Parcelforce Worldwide inland dates
| Last posting date | Service |
|---|---|
| Monday 21 December | express48, express48large |
| Tuesday 22 December | express10, expressAM, express24 |
The Parcelforce “large” service is for bigger items, and the 10 and AM services are timed delivery products, so they carry higher prices. If you are sending something fragile or valuable, a signature and a fixed delivery window can be worth the cost.
International posting from the UK
For parcels and letters going abroad, Royal Mail’s Christmas page does not give a country-by-country table. It says international services see much higher volumes at this time of year and strongly recommends posting as early as possible. Published delivery aims for each country are in Royal Mail’s Country Guides, and there is a dedicated page for gifts and goods going to the USA, where customs rules matter. Because customs checks at the other end are outside Royal Mail’s control, treat international dates as earlier than you think: if you want gifts in the US, Canada, Australia or the EU by Christmas, aim to post in the first half of December at the latest, and sooner for anything that needs a customs declaration.
Royal Mail also publishes dates for mail to British Forces Post Office (BFPO) addresses. For 2026, last posting dates from the UK are 24 October for static firm bases and 30 October for last arrival; for operations and HM Ships they are 17 November for posting and 24 November for last arrival. Mail coming back to the UK from BFPOs should be targeted at Wednesday 16 December.
What the service names mean
- 2nd Class: the cheapest option, with the longest delivery window, and no tracking by default. The Signed For version adds proof of delivery.
- Tracked 48 and Tracked 24: parcels with online tracking and a delivery target of 48 or 24 hours, working days only.
- 1st Class: faster than 2nd Class and the usual choice for cards that you are posting late.
- Special Delivery Guaranteed: the premium service with a delivery guarantee and compensation if it fails. It has the latest cut-off of the Royal Mail range.
The gap between the cheapest and fastest service can be five days, which is why last posting dates differ so much. If you are close to the date, check whether the extra cost of upgrading is smaller than the cost of a gift that arrives late.
Bank holidays and what they change
Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday and Boxing Day is a Saturday. In England and Wales, GOV.UK lists Monday 28 December as the substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own arrangements, so check your nation’s bank-holiday list. In practice, expect fewer collections and deliveries around December 25–28, and do not assume a parcel posted on the last posting date will arrive on the final working day before Christmas.
A UK timeline you can follow
- Late November: finish choosing gifts and decide which ones will be delivered by the retailer directly to the recipient. Many stores publish their own last order date for Christmas delivery; follow the earlier of the store’s date and the carrier’s.
- First week of December: post overseas parcels, and send anything going to Northern Ireland, the Scottish Highlands and Islands or remote areas, which can take longer.
- By Friday 11 December: a comfortable personal deadline for 2nd Class cards and parcels.
- Friday 18 – Saturday 19 December: 2nd Class and Tracked 48 cut-offs.
- Monday 21 December: 1st Class, Tracked 24 and Parcelforce 48.
- 22–23 December: Parcelforce express services and Special Delivery Guaranteed. This is the premium zone.
Tips for cards
Cards are small and cheap, and they are the part most people leave until the last minute. Use the right postage for the size: Royal Mail charges by dimensions and weight, and an oversized or heavy card sent with a standard stamp can be surcharged to the recipient. Write the postcode clearly and add a return address on the back. If you are sending many cards, post them in one trip and in batches by destination so you do not miss a collection time.
If you have missed the date
Choose a faster service, use a courier that is still collecting, or switch to a click-and-collect order near the recipient. Another option is to send a digital gift voucher with a message and post the gift in the New Year. Compare the cost of a premium service with the price of a replacement gift before you decide, and check what compensation or refund applies if the item is late.
Planning a Black Friday gift purchase as well? See the 2026 sales calendar for dates, then use the discount calculator to check that a deal is worth buying.
Returns, exchanges and what to tell recipients
Many Christmas problems come after the parcel is sent. If you are posting a gift, tell the recipient the tracking number and the expected delivery window, and ask them to watch for a card through the door if they are out. Suggest a safe place or neighbour in advance. If something does not arrive, contact the sender first. For online orders, the retailer rather than the courier normally handles the claim, because you have a contract with the shop. Keep all packaging until the problem is settled.
For items you intend to return, check the retailer’s extended Christmas returns policy, which may run into January, and note the deadline. Royal Mail Tracked Returns 48 can be used where a retailer provides a label, with the Saturday 19 December date given above for returns to arrive before Christmas. If you are returning an item after Christmas, our returns guide sets out the rules, including the 14 + 14 day cancellation pattern for online purchases.
Planning for postcodes that take longer
Royal Mail’s dates are the same for the whole UK, but real-world journey times differ. A parcel from London to the Highlands and Islands or to Northern Ireland travels further and can be hit by weather and ferry or flight disruption in December. If the destination is remote, treat the date for the next-faster service as your own last posting date. Likewise, if you live in a rural area with a single weekly collection, find out when the box is cleared, since the “last posting date” assumes that you post before the final collection of the day.
